The Foubarasse project explores the musical potential of an object which, at first glance, is not intended for this use. After multiple tests and research in his garage, Sébastien Maltais designed a series of Fujaras: harmonic flutes made using PVC tubes and "elbow grease".

Biographie
Self-taught musician with a varied background, Sébastien Maltais began to bathe more seriously in new music in the mid-2000s. His interest in music in all its forms led him to found the League of Musical Improvisation of Saguenay in 2005, Micro Ouvert à la Chanson (Open Mic Evenings for Songs) in 2006, before becoming involved with the Centre d'Expérimentation Musicale (CEM) and the Festival des musiques de création for which he will hold the position of Artistic Director from 2011 to 2017.
His involvement as a member of the CEM allows him to rub shoulders and learn alongside some of the pillars of new music in Québec including Pierre Tanguay, Pierre Dumont, Jean-Pierre Bouchard, André Duchesne, Bernard Falaise, Yannick Rieu, Robert-Marcel Lepage, Jean Derome and Joane Hêtu, gradually forging his identity, his vision and his musical vocabulary.
After collaborating on various musical projects (more or less experimental) and accompanying several artists from the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region (Bruno Rodéo, Joel Martel, Frank et le Cosmos, Atchoum le clown, etc.), Sébastien now devotes himself to creation. Since 2018 he has led the Foubarasse project for which he builds PVC flutes and manufactures melodies. In addition to his recent implications with the sculptor Thomas Meloche in the manufacture of ice instruments and his experiences with mechanical music, he is currently working on the creation of an amplified musical solo performance in the remote wilderness.
Métaphore
The work with a minimalist and airy character is akin to the metaphor of travel: it is a tale which highlights the different adventures experienced by a shepherd (Sébastien) and his flock (the musicians) during their transhumance (the periodic migration of livestock from the plain, which becomes established in the mountains during the summer). The musical pieces retrace this journey in a sensitive way. This sleek project highlights the physical simplicity of the Fujaras as well as the lightness of the sound produced by the instrument.
